Positive representation of difference is hard to find in films, but Adam Pearson’s role as Oswald in A Different Man proves that characters with a visible difference can be charismatic, bold and joyful.
The themes of the film are complex, tackling issues such as identity loss, while playing with parallels in a thought-provoking way. The core message is one of self-acceptance and not letting the views of others stop you from making the most out of life.
Campaigners and staff from Changing Faces had the opportunity to attend a special screening of A Different Man before its cinema release, which included an introduction from Adam himself alongside his co-star Sebastian Stan who plays the lead.
Our ambassadors Brenda and Phil said:
“A Different Man reflected what it means to redefine one’s sense of self, with and without a visible difference. The dynamic between Adam and Sebastian’s characters beautifully examines the impact of how trauma and personal struggles make you reconsider your own perceptions of difference and belonging.
“Just because a person may be able to hide their visible difference, or there are solutions to help “heal” it, it doesn’t mean that how they handle life changes for the better straight away, if at all.
“A Different Man is a thought-provoking narrative that encourages viewers to reconsider their perceptions of difference and belonging, all while showing what it means to live with the constant judgment of the mask that we put on each day to function, or to survive.” – Brenda
“There were many scenarios in A Different Man that resonated with me – the screen writers and director had obviously done their homework. As well as connecting with the film on a personal level, it also kept me interested and indeed guessing about what was going to happen next.
“While the main story line was a bit far-fetched, the acting was very believable, so having to stretch your belief in some respects didn’t take anything away from the film itself.” – Phil
A Different Man released in the UK on 4th October – do see it if you can!
